Uss Texas 1914 - For more than 70 years, the massive warship has docked in La Porte, directly across from the San Jacinto Monument.

If you've never visited a floating naval museum, you might not think much of the battleship USS Texas (BB-35). However, the Navy ship is one of the most famous ships in the history of the US Navy. Made during the First and Second World Wars.

The battleship USS Texas (BB-35) was first launched from a shipyard in Virginia on May 18, 1912, and entered service two years later in 1914. 13 mile range - an incredibly powerful weapon for the time. The battleship Texas also packed four 21-inch torpedo tubes. Although World War I was already raging in Europe, the Texan battleship was first sent to Mexican waters in response to the capture of the boat's American crew at Tampico by Mexican federal troops.

After returning to the East Coast for patrols and repairs, the battleship Texas was eventually forced into a blockade in the North Sea after the United States entered World War I. She accompanies other ships in service and patrols with the Royal Navy's Grand Fleet.

In the early 1940s, the ship was fitted with larger guns, while wartime upgrades included radar and anti-aircraft guns. The Texas warship also ejected Vought OS2U Kingfishers. These improvements made the Texan warship a particularly deadly and effective weapon. In October 1942, the battleship Texas was sent to North Africa, where she supported the Allied landings. But the ship became best known for its role in the second amphibious assault: the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. During the attack, Texas heavies bombarded German defenses on Omaha Beach. Wounded Allied troops were boarded and treated after the invasion.

The Texas warship would see additional action on the European stage before being sent to the Pacific. It stopped at Long Beach, California and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii en route for repairs and arrived in time for the Japanese invasion of Okinawa. As the army prepared for the invasion, the Texan warship bombarded the island for six days. During the attack, the battleship Texas survived damage from several kamikaze attacks. The long, protracted occupation of Okinawa lasted three months. The battleship Texas provided support to Allied troops in the field for two of the three months.

After the end of the war, the Texas battleship participated in his last military operation. Operation Magic Carpet was a major mobilization by the Warships Administration to bring home thousands of military personnel stationed overseas. She sailed from the South Pacific to San Pedro, California and made two additional round trips to Oahu, Hawaii to bring veterans home. But in 1946 it was clear that the time had come to decommission the war-weary ship.

In 1947, the Texas Legislature created the Battleship Texas Commission to help maintain the ship. A year later, it crossed the Houston Ship Channel to a dock near the San Jacinto Monument, where it would rest for more than 70 years. The battleship Texas became the first permanent ironclad memorial museum and was commissioned as the flagship of the Texas Navy. On average, around 80,000 people visit the ship each year, where they learn about the ship's impressive history and its role in the most important military conflicts of the 20th century.

By 2019, it became clear that the Texas battleship needed a lot of work. Her hull was leaking about 2,000 gallons a day and there was a lot of deferred maintenance on her superstructure and other systems. Part of the problem was that, although one of the most popular attractions in the state, the museum did not attract enough visitors to support its maintenance. The Battleship Texas Foundation has begun preparations for a major renovation with a new home where more people can experience life on the Battleship Texas.

The dry dock was shipped from the Bahamas to Galveston this summer to prepare for a $35 million re-shipment. While the boat waited to be towed through the Houston Ship Channel to Galveston in La Porte, staff and volunteers began work on the repair and restoration of the historic guns and large superstructure. 23,000 cubic meters of mud around the ship had to be removed just to move it off the quay alone. It will be transferred to dry dock this year.

After commissioning on 12 March, TEXAS did not leave Norfolk until 24 March (for the New York Navy Yard). The crew had to prepare the ship for sailing, and supplies and provisions were brought for 12 days. The Newport News Shipyard provided the structure and systems, but now it was up to the Navy to provide the consumables (from parts to eggs, soap, oil, cash) to keep the ship operational. For the first two days, the crew ate on other ships until the facilities in Texas were ready for breakfast on the 14th. Simultaneously, 8 to 39 workers from the Newport News and Norfolk shipyards worked on various structures and systems from March 13 to March 23 (carpenters, riveters, shipbuilders, ship fitters, ship owners, drillers, laborers and helpers)

Fire control equipment was installed at the New York Navy Yard. Installing the range finder forward of turrets 2 and 4 required cutting through 9 inches of Class A armor on each side. While in New York, US Navy ships were ordered to Mexico in response to rising tensions between the United States and Mexico that began with the "Tampico Incident" on April 26. When the shipyard work was completed, Texas was ordered to Mexico. . On May 7, The New York Times reported that the "Texas Club of New York" unveiled a 9-by-18-foot silk flag on May 6. The flag was then hoisted aft.
